STATE REPRESENTATIVE SUSAN GOLDSTEIN TO BE HONORED AT HEARTS FOR THERAPY OF THE ARTS ROMANTIC VALENTINE DINNER

Event Will Raise Funds to Send Special Needs Kids to Camp

DAVIE, Fla.—State Representative Susan Goldstein will be the honoree at the Hearts for Therapy of the Arts benefit.  The romantic Valentine’s dinner is slated for February 12, 2005 and benefits the non-profit National Autism Registry.  Funds raised will be used to send children with severe special needs to Summer camp.

“I’m so pleased to be the honoree of this important event.  Having a special needs child, I realize how important the programs are and the special care that is provided by the Therapy of the Arts.” said Goldstein.  “Therapy of the Arts allows special needs children to attend summer programs that provide the therapy they need while having fun.”

Goldstein, who represents District 97, has been a champion of special needs children and is extremely active in educational issues.  She served on the Florida DCF-ACHA Developmental Services Redesign Stakeholders Committee and the Broward County School District’s Exceptional Student Education Advisory Executive Committee.

Representative Goldstein served on the Autism Society of America Business and Finance Committee and was Vice President of the Autism Society of Florida.  She received the Champion for Children Award from Nova Southeastern University in 2004.  Goldstein was also the Autism Society of Florida’s Outstanding Volunteer and the Broward Children’s Consortium Child Advocate of the Year.

Hearts for the Arts Valentine’s Dinner will be held at The Signature Grand in Davie.  Parents and educators of special needs children may attend the benefit for half price.  Tickets for the gala evening are $150 per person. The event will include an appearance by the world’s largest cupid and live entertainment by Lawrence of Florida.   For tickets to the dinner, to place an ad in the program or contribute an item to the auction, please call 954-236-9415.

About the Therapy of the Arts Summer Camp Program

Therapy of the Arts incorporates art, music, cooking and movement and enables speech and occupational therapists to use the arts to make therapy fun and exciting.  Studies show that the use of movement, music and the arts benefits children with special needs.

Some children with special needs cannot participate in traditional summer camp.  Therapy of the Arts allows them to have some of the fun of summer camp, while continuing to work on their therapy goals.

Therapy of the Arts was created by Valerie Herskowitz, a veteran speech therapist, who is the parent of an autistic child and the owner of Dimensions Therapy Center.  Dimensions Therapy Center offers speech and occupational therapy, as well as computer based therapies.
