DEVELOPMENT SOFTWARE FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH AUTISM |
Reprinted
from the ADVOCATE Newsletter of the Autism Society of America,
Inc. Jan-Feb. 2000. |
As we embark upon a new millennium, we can not help but wonder
what lies ahead for our children in this rapidly advancing technological
world. I have actually visited a house in which a computer controls
every function in the home. This technology offers the opportunity
for our children with autism to have an optimistic view of a more
independent future.
As
a speech pathologist and as a mother of a son with autism, I feel
strongly that computer-based language learning for individuals
with autism and related disabilities is imperative. Autistic individuals
appear to attend well to this mode of instruction. However, from
my experience, I have come to realize that the type of software
that is used is critical to the success. Many of the software
programs that are available in stores (called OTSS- off-the-shelf
software) may not be effective for individuals with autism. These
programs were not designed for our children and have inherent
problems because of this fact. Though there may be some entertainment
value, the educational advantage may be minimal. There are companies
that specialize in special needs language software. The following
is a list of many of these products that are available today.
Level
1-Individuals with Low Language Levels
Creature Games by Laureate-These entertaining games
that use cartoon characters are designed to train cause and effect,
turn taking, and the use of a single switch. They are appropriate
for individuals who are lower functioning. There are six different
programs in this series. The price ranges from $80-$95 for a single
program. Special package prices are available.
Words
Around Me by Edmark-This program helps students identify
275 common vocabulary words through the progression of five activities:
Word Identification, Plurals, Categorization, Sameness and Difference.
A stimulating character named Greenie helps students associate
words with a variety of pictures including photographs and graphic
images. This program, which is currently available only as a school
version, is priced at $395.95.
The Early Vocabulary Development Series by Laureate-This
series includes 3 different programs, First Words, First Words
II, and First Verbs. They are designed as a highly structured
training of 100 early developing nouns and 40 verbs and are categorically
arranged. Each program offers 6 levels of instruction starting
with introductory training and progressing upwards to the test
level. An animated creature is utilized for cueing techniques
and also to positively reinforce correct answers. The price is
$235 for a single program and $500 for the package of three programs.
Labelling Tutor by Millennium Software- This program
teaches children to associate written words and sounds with pictures.
The basis of the program uses a behavioral procedure known as
discrete trials to teach the material. The program motivates learning
by utilizing visual displays, sounds, and games when the child
has been successful. There are over 180 color photo pictures that
are included with the program; however, instructions are included
on how additional pictures can be added. The price is $199.95.
Nouns & Sounds by Laureate-The objective of this program is
to stimulate auditory awareness and memory as well as build listening
skills. Individuals learn to match common sounds with 100 photographs.
